8-Day Lemosho Route Itinerary
The 8-Day Lemosho Route is one of Kilimanjaro’s most beautiful and successful climbs. This route starts on the remote western side of the mountain, offering a quiet and scenic approach with excellent acclimatization and a high summit success rate.
Itinerary Overview
Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Altitude: 2,100m to 2,650m
Distance: 6km
Time: 3–4 hours
Trek through lush rainforest to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree Camp).
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp
Altitude: 2,650m to 3,610m
Distance: 8km
Time: 5–6 hours
Gradual climb through heather zone to Shira Plateau.
Day 3: Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp
Altitude: 3,610m to 3,850m
Distance: 7km
Time: 4–5 hours
Cross the plateau and enjoy expansive views of Kilimanjaro's glaciers.
Day 4: Shira 2 to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Altitude: 3,850m to 4,630m (Lava Tower), down to 3,960m
Distance: 10km
Time: 6–8 hours
Acclimatization day. Trek high to Lava Tower, then descend to Barranco Camp.
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Altitude: 3,960m to 4,035m
Distance: 6km
Time: 4–5 hours
Climb the Great Barranco Wall, then traverse glacial valleys to Karanga Camp.
Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Altitude: 4,035m to 4,680m
Distance: 4km
Time: 3–4 hours
Short, steep climb to Barafu Camp. Rest and prepare for summit night.
Day 7: Barafu Camp to Summit (Uhuru Peak) to Mweka Camp
Altitude: 4,680m to 5,895m, then down to 3,100m
Distance: 17km
Time: 12–15 hours
Midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak. After the summit, descend to Mweka Camp.
Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Altitude: 3,100m to 1,640m
Distance: 10km
Time: 3–4 hours
Final descent through rainforest. Receive summit certificate and transfer to hotel.
