7-Day Machame Route Itinerary

The 7-Day Machame Route offers a scenic and well-paced ascent to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. With an additional acclimatization day, it greatly improves summit success rates while showcasing the mountain's diverse ecosystems.

Itinerary Overview

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Altitude: 1,800m to 3,000m
Distance: 11km
Time: 5–7 hours
Begin in the rainforest zone. Lush vegetation, rich wildlife, and mild incline. Overnight at Machame Camp.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Altitude: 3,000m to 3,840m
Distance: 5km
Time: 4–6 hours
The trail leads out of the forest into moorland. Clear skies offer views of Kibo Peak and Mount Meru.

Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Altitude: 3,840m to 4,630m (Lava Tower) then 3,950m (Barranco)
Distance: 10km
Time: 6–8 hours
A key acclimatization day. Climb high, sleep low to adjust to altitude.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Altitude: 3,950m to 4,000m
Distance: 5km
Time: 4–5 hours
Scramble the Barranco Wall, a highlight of the route. Enjoy scenic views on a relatively short hiking day.

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Altitude: 4,000m to 4,680m
Distance: 4km
Time: 3–4 hours
Cross alpine desert. Early dinner and rest for summit night.

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Summit (Uhuru Peak) & down to Mweka Camp

Altitude: 4,680m to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak), then 3,100m
Distance: 17km
Time: 12–15 hours
Begin summit attempt around midnight. Reach the peak at sunrise, then descend to Mweka Camp.

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Altitude: 3,100m to 1,640m
Distance: 10km
Time: 3–4 hours
Final descent through rainforest. Receive your certificate and celebrate your achievement.
