6-Day Marangu Route Itinerary
The 6-Day Marangu Route adds an extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, improving summit success and giving more time to adjust. This route offers hut accommodations and scenic, gentle trails.
Itinerary Overview
Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Altitude: 1,860m to 2,700m
    Distance: 8km
    Time: 4–5 hours
    Trek through rainforest to Mandara Hut. Possible sightings of black and white colobus monkeys.
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Altitude: 2,700m to 3,720m
    Distance: 12km
    Time: 6–8 hours
    Trek into moorland with panoramic views of Mawenzi and Kilimanjaro’s peak.
Day 3: Acclimatization at Horombo Hut
Altitude: 3,720m (day hike to Zebra Rocks, ~4,000m)
    Spend the day acclimatizing with a hike to Zebra Rocks or relax around Horombo. This helps prepare your body for higher altitude.
Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Altitude: 3,720m to 4,700m
    Distance: 10km
    Time: 6–7 hours
    Pass through alpine desert with minimal vegetation. Rest early for your summit push.
Day 5: Kibo Hut to Summit (Uhuru Peak) & Back to Horombo
Altitude: 4,700m to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak), then down to 3,720m
    Distance: 21km
    Time: 12–14 hours
    Midnight start to reach the summit at sunrise. Descend back to Horombo for rest.
Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
Altitude: 3,720m to 1,860m
    Distance: 19km
    Time: 6–8 hours
    Final descent through rainforest. Collect your summit certificate and transfer to hotel.
